Red, Ripe, Juicy Tomatoes

It’s amazing to me that you can’t find a good tomato in the US unless you grow it yourself.

redtomatoes.jpgJust take a look at these beauties.  Don’t they just make your mouth water?  Guess where I got them….at the supermarket.  I know, it’s hard to believe.  I paid 2 euros a kilo (about 91 cents per pound). Don’t remember how much tomatoes cost back in the States anymore.

Slice them up, drizzle them with a little olive oil, sprinkle a little salt and oregano over them.  Eat them with some fresh mozzarella (even better, buffalo mozzarella) and some nice crusty bread.  It’s the perfect meal.

You can’t fault the fresh fruit and vegetables here.  I actually prefer to get mine from the street vendors, but I do buy at the grocery store too.

We’ve got a vendor that comes around every Monday and Friday with a truck full of fresh fruit & vegetables.  It varies by season, but right now things are getting into full swing.  The fresh peas these days are out of this world, not to mention the fava beans. The strawberries have been out for a few weeks and I saw cherries for the first time the other day, so I’ll have to see how much they cost.  The first ones of the season are usually more expensive.

I don’t have to wait for Monday and Friday though.  Tuesdays are market days, so there are 2 or 3 produce vendors present. Then, another truck comes around on Wednesdays and one on Saturdays. There’s always an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Every once in a while, when something particular is in season, other trucks, carrying only that item, will go by announcing what they have. Recently it was artichokes.  This open bed truck, piled high with artichokes went through the town, announcing loudly that they had the freshest, tastiest artichokes.  I didn’t try them, so I can’t comment on whether they were the freshest and tastiest or not.  I’m a little lazy when it comes to artichokes, preferring to buy the frozen kind that are already cleaned.

Of course, when the vegetable trucks come, they have their loudspeakers to announce their arrival, plus they play music so you know they’re there, just in case you didn’t hear them pull up.

In fact here he comes now…..time to go stock up.

I love that the tomatoes are coming into season–nothing like a salad just like you described with a little olive oil, salt, and oregano (I like to throw in a cucumber if available). Hope you stocked up!

I did and am impatiently waiting for the tortarelli to come in. A tomato cucumber salad is perfect on a hot day.
