La Serenata (serenade) is still done here in town before a wedding. Typically, the groom shows up one evening before the wedding with some friends (at least one of whom plays the accordion) and they all sing the traditional songs. A ladder is propped up against the house and the groom climbs up it to stand with her on the balcony, then they both come down for a party and, of course, more singing.
We recently had a serenata in town that went a few steps further. To start with, they had keyboards, a guitar, and an accordion with speakers and microphones hooked up on the back of a tractor which transported the band to the bride’s house. Then, no mere ladder for our groom. Oh no, he was lifted to the balcony by a small crane. There were a few moments wait as the bride removed his harness. But then a big cheer went up from everyone who was watching. One of the songs they sing is “Lauretta mia by E. Musiani. I wanted to tape them singing, but there was too much background noise. I have to say though, I like it a lot more when the group here is singing it. We’ve got some talented singers here in town and they put their whole heart and soul into it when they sing.Here are the words:

Thanks so much for the links you provide to the music. I have gone to the sites and downloaded the music for my honey. He is from Pratola Peligna and is there right now visiting his relatives. You should see his face when he hears the music I find on the web. It brings back memories for him. I have bookmarked your blog so I can test some of your recipes…they all sound yummy.

Thanks Lori. I’m glad I could give you some music for your honey. I’m hoping to add some more of the local songs if I can get them recorded. They’re pretty particular to the area, so I’m working on it.
