I now have a truly Italian house. Why, you ask? Because we put one of those beadie things on the door. Better that than have a million flies in the house. You see, screen doors aren’t a very common thing around here. In fact, if you wanted one, you’d have to pay a pretty penny for it. So, everyone has these bead things hanging in front of the door. Now, they’re not always made of beads. In fact, mine isn’t. It’s made of some kind of nylon. But there are all different kinds. There are some that are truly beads, some that are some kind of flat plastic interlocked piece with a design on the front, and some that are made of fabric. There’s even one that I call the Bob Marley door because it’s made of some kind of fuzzy brown yarn stuff (don’t know what else to call it) that looks like a Rastafarian’s hair. So, you see, there are many designs.
We also put screens on the windows. A lot of houses don’t have them which means that you either have to keep the windows closed, or the outside blinds or shutters closed, or deal with the flies. Last year I went crazy with them in our old apartment, so went searching on the internet for a remedy. I read that if you fill a plastic bag with water and put a penny in it, then hang it from the window the flies won’t enter. Yes, I was so desperate that I did it. It did work when the sun hit the bag, I guess it scared the flies off, but once the sun moved around to the other side of the house, it was no longer effective. The neighbors thought I was crazy and that I hung a bag with a goldfish in the sun.
But, no more plastic bags for me. I’m now set for the hot weather which, believe me, has arrived.
Here’s the view from the inside
And here’s one from the outside

Do the ‘beads’ work? Many people around here have them, and many of the shops too. At the caseificio we go to, they have really strange looking ones that look like plastic pull-tabs. A couple of years ago, we put in screens on the windows and doors. It did cost a lot, but we were having huge problems with mosquitoes and wasps in addition to the flies! Wasps in the house really freak me out!

I would freak out with wasps in the house too. The beads seem to work though. We still get a fly every once in a while, but you would get those with a screen door. There’s nothing worse than a house full of flies. Ugh!

Do you know of any online sites that sell the door beadie things? My honey/husband just came back from visiting his relatives in Pratola Peligna. Looking at his photos I saw his aunt had beads for her door curtain. I wanted to do a post on my blog and was looking for my info to post.
