Water under the bridge

They say the problem was that there wasn’t enough of it.  At least, that’s one version.  I’m sure there’s a more scientific explanation.  And maybe even the cause is something totally different.  But, in any event, something caused the bridge to collapse.  Or maybe crinkle would be the better word.  It didn’t collapse entirely, just sort of “folded” in the middle.

It was the talk of the town, especially since a lot of people had crossed the bridge shortly before it caved in.  I’m talking about one of the bridges along the Trignina, our main route to the coast.  It crossed the river Treste near the town of Lentella.  The Trignina, although only a two lane road, is highly travelled.  It runs, for the most part, along the river Trigno on the border between Abruzzo and Molise and is the main artery leading to the coast in this area.  Many people travel the road to and from work in the factories or in other towns along the coast.  So, it’s pretty inconvenient that the bridge is no longer passable.  Click here to see a picture of it and an article from one of the local papers.

It occurred around 6:30 and one traveller said that he had just crossed the bridge when he saw it cave in in his rearview mirror.  That’s a pretty scary thought.  Fortunately no large trucks were crossing and no other cars were on the bridge at the time.

Of course, there is a back way which I actually like better since it has more scenery, although it does take a little more time.  Plus, there are no large trucks along the route which makes the ride more enjoyable.

So, while we wait for the bridge to be repaired, we’ll enjoy the view and take the back road.

Now would this be a bridge that I would need to take in order to come visit you?

Nope, I’m between where you’ll be and where it is. So, no problems there.

Yes, you did. Now to get there you have to go the back way – take the left that goes towards San Buono, then a right once you cross the bridge. Once you get past Lentella you can get back on the Trignina. It’s actually a nice drive although the road is a little bumpy.
