Remembrance of Things Past

Here in town we have a castle which, being a castle is, of course, pretty neat…

Up until this year, there was a museum of sorts located inside the tower.  In the museum were tools, furniture, clothing, etc. that were used in the past.  I have to admit though, it was sort of placed helter-skelter inside the museum.  There was some logic to it, but it was still pretty jumbled.  Plus, it was a little dark and in need of some cleaning and restructuring.

Well, this year, they moved it downstairs, to the lower level and spruced it up a whole lot.  Here are some pictures.

So now, the tower is empty.  Right now there’s scaffolding up on the outside and they’re doing some renovations.  Next year, hopefully, they’ll start work on the inside.

The museum is only open during the summer, on Saturdays and Sundays and it’s free of charge.  Of course, I know the guy with the key, so, as long as he’s not busy, we can show somebody through.

There’s also a great museum over in San Buono with exhibits starting from prehistory, through the Sannitic, Roman, and medieval periods, right up to the present day.  There are actually some pieces of mammoth tusk that have been found in the local area.  I wasn’t allowed to take pictures though.

Back to the museum at Palmoli – they really did a great job.  Bravo to the organizers and workers.

I’m very envious of your museum! We have a ducal castle here but it’s in a really sad state. They are restoring it, and there’s a sign that suggests a museum will open when they finish…I hope so!

For this museum they collected bits and pieces from the residents of the town. People searched in attics and basements to find things to donate. Now that they’ve redone the museum they’ve added a few more things and spruced them up quite a bit. It’s just a shame that it’s only open on weekends in the summer, but there really isn’t much tourism here to warrant having it open all the time.
