Playing Foodie

After our trip to the zoo the other day (and yes, O can’t believe I put of him with a camel on the internet), we took a trip to San Vito Chietino.  It’s a nice little town on the Adriatic coast with, as I’m sure you can imagine, a fantastic view.  Check these out

Is that gorgeous or what?

Despite the view, we had other reasons for going, mainly it for the “Mostra Mercato” which is a fair with typical local products.  Of course, our friends from “La Bruna” were there, which was one of the reasons why we went, plus the fact that we’re what would be termed in the US, “foodies”.    But, I think everyone in Italy is a “foodie”.

It’s not just about vendors coming to sell their products.  The difference is that these vendors are passionate about what they do and the products they sell.  Most of the items are produced at the family level.  In fact, if they ever industrialized the process, I’m sure their products would be ruined.

We learned a lot about sausage and salami from the Azienda Agricola Zootecnica Silvano Scioli.  He’s working with a breed of pigs that has almost disappeared that used to be used to make sausage and salami years ago.  His goal is to rediscover the old flavors.  I couldn’t get a picture though because he was surrounded by curious people.

We also tasted some cheese that is aged in a cave from I Carrecini.  (We ended up buying some too).

There were vendors showing and selling wines, honey, herbs, olive oil, baked goods, and grappa.  Here were some of the baked goods.  We tasted a delicious cake made with ricotta.sweets.jpg

As for grappa, the Distelleria Grimaldi is located in the nearby town of Montazzoli and is one of very few distilleries in the region.  I have to admit, I’m not a big fan of grappa, but some of their flavored grappas are quite smooth and lose some of that pure alcohol flavor that grappa has.

This is the time of year when there are several of these fairs.  There was also one in San Salvo this past weekend.  This coming weekend we’ll be having one here in Palmoli and I’ve heard there may be one soon in Monteodorisio.

That is a gorgeous view. The cave cheese sounds really interesting, but I have to admit I’m much more enchanted by the picture of all the baked goods!

There was one man sitting on a balcony overlooking the ocean. What a view he has every day. And yes, the sweets were tempting to me too.

We passed through San Vito Chietino and saw the mercato, on our way to the Cena sui Trabocchi dinner sponsored by Slow Food. What a wonderful stretch of coastline in that part of Abruzzo, and San Vito is a cute town.

Just happned onto your blog. We live up the road a spell in southern Marche!
