Where there’s smoke…

There’s fire……

This was the scene Saturday afternoon here right outside of town. The fire burned for several hours and the fire company and volunteer civil protection services were here to help. Paths were plowed through the countryside in the path of the fire in hopes of stopping it.

These guys came to the rescue too. There was the helicopter which periodically dumped water from the large bucket (see it hanging down there?)

and the Canadair which took periodic trips to the sea to fill up with water to dump on the fire.

These guys are amazing in the Canadairs. They swoop so low to get as close to the fire as they can that it seems like you can almost reach out and touch them. At one point I tried to take a picture but it was so close all I got was the belly of the plane.

Here’s a picture of part of the burnt area:

Thank goodness with the combined effort of the people of the town, the firemen, forest service, and the civil protection service, they succeeded in putting it out, after several hours of dumping water and several trips to get water. No one was hurt and no one’s home was burnt, only some land outside of town. Still damaging, but the land will regenerate itself and, assuming we get some rain one of these days, it will be green again.

Those are amazing photos. I’ve haven’t gotten that close to any fires yet, and I hope I won’t have to! I’ve never seen those helicopters, just the planes.

  2. [...] Wild fires are a big problem here in southern Italy right now. Nikinpos, who lives in Positano, mentions that a section of road along the Amalfi Coast was recently closed due to fire. And on another blog, The Flavors of Abruzzo, I found pictures of water-dowsing planes in action. Turns out that in English, at least, these planes are called “Canadairs” and were built specifically as water bombers. [...]

Ah! I could’ve sworn I put you on my Bloglines, but you’re not there. Now I have catching up to do!

I posted some Canadair photos too (although I got the name wrong in the original post)–great discussion in the comments about them too:

    it’s a bird…it’s a plane…it’s a ship…

It was neat to watch them, but I wish it wasn’t necessary. I got as close to the fire as I dared, but to be honest, I’m a little bit afraid of it.
