Vacation is over and its back to work. Well, for us anyway. There are some people who are on vacation until next week, having the entire month of August off, but we’re not among them. And no, I’m not tan. I didn’t spend one single day at the beach, despite the fact that we’re only 20 minutes away. I’m just not a beach gal.
Our little town has been bustling with people the last few weeks. I would say the population doubled. Why? Well, many people left to find work in other areas of Italy, or even in other countries. But, they’ve kept their houses here and come back at vacation time to enjoy the fresh air and relax. They come from Milan, Florence, Switzerland, France, Germany, and even from the US. I even got to speak English a bit with some visitors from Connecticut. But, they’ve all started to leave now, a few at a time, and I expect by this time next week that we’ll be back to our normal population size.
We’ve had various musicians, comedians, and theatrical presentations here in town over the past few weeks, as have all the other towns in the area. Plus we’ve been to our share of sagras (the Boar Sagra in Pennapiedimonte was my favorite) and private parties.
We even took a day trip into Rome to see the sights. There’s a bus from Vasto that takes us right into the station at Tiburtina. Now that we know how convenient it is, we may do it more often. Although, I have to say, at the end of the day, I was happy to return to town. I’m just not a big city person. It’s nice to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there. Oh, I know there are tons of people who absolutely love living in the city and think life in a small town is boring. Different strokes for different folks. Give me my small town and fresh air and I’m happy.

Sounds like we (and our towns) have a lot in common–I’ve been to the beach twice this summer, and that’s the most I’ve been there in years. I’m *so* not tan (and believe me, people tell me all the time!), and I really don’t care to be. As for the city, I feel exactly the same as well–fun to visit, but aaaah! on a daily basis as far as I’m concerned
Back to full-time work here too (I had been doing part-time). Boo.

I get all sorts of comments about how pale I am too. They ask me why I don’t go “al mare” and get some sun. Personally, I’m just not a beach person. I get bored just lying there in the sun and need to be off doing something. Yes, I could stay under the umbrella and read, but what’s the point of going then? I prefer my mountain breezes.
