The Age of Aquarium

For about a month now we have been pet owners.. And, you may think that there’s nothing like cuddling up to a dog or a cat. And you are right. But, our fish are pretty neat too, if I do say so myself.

We’ve got a large aquarium with 2 black moors, one gold oranda, one calico oranda, and 4 lionheads of various colors. We added the last 2 lionheads last night.

They don’t like to stay still for their pictures though.

This is my first experience with having fish (not counting a fish my dad won for me at the fair when I was about three that died soon thereafter), so I’ve been carefully searching the internet for all the different information I can find.

Yes, I know, you can get tropical fish and marine fish. But, I like these fish, they’re very colorful and active.

Of course, they all have names like Ugo, Gino, Aldo, etc. And yes, we can tell them apart.

Alright, I admit they’re not exactly cuddly like a dog, but they’re still cute. And no, this doesn’t really have anything to do with Abruzzo except for the fact that we live here, therefore they’re Abruzzese fish.

P is *so* now allowed to see this post. He’s been bugging me to get an aquarium and fish for the longest time, and if he sees how pretty and fun it all looks, well, I don’t know that I can put him off anymore….

Not that I don’t love fish, of course. I used to have some as a child and could spend hours watching them (I’m amused easily obviously). I just would rather spend our hard-earned euros in other ways, that’s all. Is that so wrong?

OK, I won’t let him see it.. ;)

As for the expense, O’s been wanting one for a while and with no cats or dogs, fish is the next choice. The aquarium was in “offerta” too or we never would have gotten one so big. I can understand why you could spend so much time watching them. So can I, it’s almost hypnotizing.

Ooh, I want to get fish! I actually have been wanting a dog for forever, but it’s not a good idea for our small apartment on the 6th floor. Maybe fish would be a better solution? they ARE cute!

I recently acquired a simple goldfish (my daughter’s bf won it at a carnival). It must be empty-nest syndrome, but I found myself getting close to the fish. We bought a 15 gallon aquarium and 3 more goldfish (the more fancy kind this time). They bring a lot of enjoyment – swimming up to me whenever I approach. They seem to like me talking to them.

FatBoy was sick with the Ich and I rushed out to the pet store to find what was wrong. We followed the directions carefully, and he survived beatifully. I was afraid we were going to lose him.

While watching them intently recently, I discovered that Baby has a deformed flipper, but gets along fine with it.

Jackie, I love the fish. I figure it this way. I could have bought a painting or some other decoration that I would have enjoyed looking at once or twice. Instead I have a live aquatic scene. It’s great!

GinaBeena, I know what you mean. I just love my fish. Mine had Ich too a few weeks ago and I got the medicine for them and they all survived. Our aquarium is now 110 litres and we have 8 fish. I think we’re pretty well full.

Gorgeous fish tank (and very Italian in its decor too…).

Goldfish, and especially the moors, are great pets. The moors normally display a bit more personality than the others – if you give them some floating weed they do sometimes wedge themselves in for naps.

They’re all very active fish and I’m really pleased with the choices we make. The moors are beautiful too, and sometimes very funny with their googly eyes.
