Happy Birthday to me
I was surprised around 11:00 by a knock on the door and the delivery girl handing me these

They’re from O, of course. Once he found out that I liked flowers (and particularly sunflowers as you can see here), he likes to surprise me.
It’s my third birthday here in Italy. Well, sort of. Two years ago I came over 2 days after my birthday for a whirlwind visit. A trip at New Year’s was already planned, but I couldn’t wait any longer and found a cheap flight that would bring me over for a long weekend. I knew November 1 was a holiday here and O would have the day off, and I was fortunate enough to have 3 days vacation coming to me (and able to get them on such short notice).
So,I went to the airport on Thursday night directly from work, having taken my carry-on bag with me in the morning. From there it was a 3 stage flight – from my home airport to Chicago, to London, to Rome. Unfortunately, due to a long layover in London that seemed to last forever, I didn’t arrive in Rome until 5:30 on Friday night. As you can imagine, it was rush hour and it took us 3 hours just to get out of Rome.
O booked us a hotel room and after what should have been a 3 hour car ride, we finally arrived there at midnight. (Are you adding this up? Left the airport at 5:30 pm, got in at midnight. Ugh.)
When we got to the hotel, I opened the door to find that he had already been there and set things up. There were roses and presents waiting for me.
Unfortunately, I had to leave again on Tuesday morning. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life, leaving him at the Rome airport and walking through security. I kept looking back and seeing him waiting there watching my leave. The tears were flowing freely and the urge to turn back was almost unbeatable. But, I knew I would be coming back in less than 2 months, which made it bearable, at least.
So officially, it’s only my 2nd birthday in Italy. But, even though the first time I spent it together with O was actually 3 days later, I will always count it as one of my most special birthdays.

Happy Birthday! I have been enjoying your blog these days, going back through your previous posts. The flowers are beautiful. I love sunflowers. I too had an experience like yours at the airport. A sad goodbye. But we reunited and married and now we are stuck with each other
That was 5 years ago.

Thanks Maryann! Yes, those partings were sad and difficult at the time, but like you, we’re stuck with each other now.

Happy birthday! (Sorry I’m a couple of days late.) Those flowers are beautiful. When you mentioned how difficult it was to leave O at the airport, it brought back memories to me too, of all of the goodbyes N and I had. Of course, memories like those just make us appreciate being together even more.

Thanks KC! I think all the time we spent apart is one of the reasons we’re so different from some of the other couples we know. They don’t seem to spend anywhere near as much time together as we do. Like you said, we appreciate being together even more.

Farfallina, your post was somehow diverted to my spam folder,
but I rescued it. Thanks for the birthday wishes!
