Friends, Food, and Laughter

Yesterday was our Thanksgiving Day celebration. Yes, a little late. But, as I mentioned before, Thursday wasn’t a holiday here, meaning we couldn’t all sit down and feast. So, we postponed the celebration for Sunday.

We ordered a turkey from our butcher. Well, actually, we ordered a tacchinella from our butcher. A regular tacchino probably would have been twice the size and nowhere near as good. The tacchinella here is like our white domesticated turkey in the US whereas a tacchino is much larger and black. Anyway, we ordered a tacchinella which arrived last week. All 7 kilos (15.4 pounds) of it.

Yesterday was the big day. Since we planned to eat around one, that meant I needed to get that big boy in the oven around 7:30. So, the alarm was set for 6 so that I could get the stuffing all prepared and pop it in. O was a big help, chopping vegetables, peeling potatoes, etc.

The stuffing was simple, bread cubes (which I can’t buy here, I have to make my own), grated potato, minced carrot, onion, garlic, celery, and parmigiano cheese (had to add something Italian, but truth be told, I’ve always put it in my stuffing).

Of course, my family couldn’t be here since they’re miles away back in the US, so we invited our friends over to share the day with us. They were looking forward to it since stuffed turkey isn’t something that is cooked very often here. They told me not to make any dessert, they were going to bring something special.

So, what did they bring for dessert? This cake.

They had it made special at the bakery with the Italian flag and the American flag. For Italy and for the American (me) and the American holiday. They were upset because they wanted it to be rectangular with both flags the same size. But, I think it’s great. It was tasty too – yellow cake with two layers of cream and chocolate chips.

So, we spent a great day with friends, we all ate too much and we shared plenty of laughs. Definitely something to be thankful for.

I was thrilled with the cake and thought it was very thoughtful. I’m not sure how they painted the flags on though. Someone was very patient, I guess. Although I know some stores in the states have machines they can use to put pictures on cakes. Maybe they used one of those.

KC, well, Thanksgiving day is all about turkey and starch, so I the more starch the merrier. Just kidding. The potatoes really give the stuffing a nice texture and flavor.

Nope Kem, no football here. There’s soccer, but Thanksgiving certainly isn’t the all day sports like it is there. You don’t see them on Christmas and New Year’s either.
