Moving into the 21st Century

The omens are good for this year so far. On January 2 I had a knock on my door early in the morning. It was the broadband internet installer. How lucky can I be? And I was the first in town to get it.

Antenna.jpgThe phone company won’t bring DSL to these small mountain villages, so another solution had to be found. It turned out to be a wireless system that they started testing about 2 months ago. To put it simply, they installed large antennas in a few of the towns. These then transmit to individual small antennas that are installed for each person who wants the service.

Of course, as soon as I found out, I put my name in the hat to get one installed and, with a little help from a friend, got my nameAntenna2.jpg put on the top of the list. I have a good reason for it though since I need it for work.

Now, it’s not the fastest in the world. On a good day, since the speed does vary, I get DSL speeds. The worst it’s been has been 900 kbps of download (I test it several times a day). But, in comparison to dial-up….well….there’s no comparison. So, I’ve been very happy since I’ve gotten it installed. I can finish my work in half the time, and that makes a big difference in my life.

The best part though, is that now that I have it installed I can use Skype to call my family in the states. Those video calls are great!

  1. Fine, be that way. If I’m stuck with dial-up, you have to send the baby.

Not a chance. :) But, I have to say, this internet connection is not all flowers and sunshine. I’ve been having trouble with it all morning. :(

I know what you mean about the dial up in Italy. When I was there it was stressful to me because I’m use to high speed internet.
