I have to say chicken and rice was always one of my favorites and, although there are some differences between her version and the one I grew up with, the dish that Cherrye has made for us over at My Bella Vita certainly brings back memories.
Head on over and check it out.
For those readers in America (or not), are there any typical American dishes you can think of that Italians might never have tasted? Of course, we have to be able to find the ingredients here. Some things, like Sweet Potatoes, for example, just can’t be found here. Leave a comment with your suggestions….

Mary- I’ve had luck lately finding sweet potatoes here! They’re patate americane…. I found them at the Iper in Colonella in Teramo. They were on the exotic/organic table in the produce section, and I’ve seen them there several times through the last few months. And they were labled as grown in Italy! We had them last week and they were perfect!
I have heard however that lots of varieties of potatoes are sold as patate americane- in fact I was in Pordenone in Veneto earlier this week and saw some “patate americane” in a shop, and while they were interesting looking, they definately not sweet potatoes!
Good luck

They grow something called patate americane in the Ferrara area, but they’re white inside, so I don’t know if they’re the same.

Ha ha. Yep, that’s what I mean. But what we had were definately orange inside, definately sweet potatoes, and delicious. Don’t give up looking! Or plan a day trip to Teramo and swing by Iper!

My brother-in-law lives in Teramo. I just may have to ask them to pick some up before heading down here.
