Flavor Nostalgia

Yes, I know, I’m surrounded by delicious food here in Italy.  Things like truly good pasta, the best pecorino, real parmigiano, tons of fresh produce (I just had some fresh, home-grown cauliflower), and delicious meat (yes, even that tastes different here).  But, every once in a while, I get nostalgic for things that I can’t get here.  Sometimes I can remedy the situation – as in Friday’s Apple Butter recipe – and sometimes I can’t because I just can’t find the ingredients.

The other day I was shopping at Lidl which often runs specials on food from different countries.  They were having a special on British food and look what I found

Oatmeal!

Now, I know some have found oatmeal in other parts of Italy, but I have yet to find it here.  And, yes, this is instant oatmeal.  True, the other kind is better for you, but beggars can’t be choosers.  Besides, I grew up on instant oatmeal.  Quaker oats – my favorite flavors were apples and cinnamon (what a surprise) and maple and brown sugar.

So, I’m rationing my oatmeal and every once in a while I treat myself for breakfast. (And if I mix a teaspoon of apple butter in I’ve got oatmeal with apples and cinnamon) Yummm!

  1. I am chuckling here. Did you look among the health foods for plain aveno? Anyway, can you make Apple Crisp with it?

No, I don’t think it would work for Apple Crisp. I’m going to have to start looking for a health food store to see if they have aveno. I looked everywhere in my grocery store – even the health food section – and the only thing they have is muesli. Maybe I could use that for apple crisp.
