Everything but the kitchen sink

This past weekend we had new cabinets installed in our kitchen.  That may seem strange considering that we’re renting an apartment, but believe me, here it’s normal.

When I was first getting ready to move here, O was scouting out apartments for us.  He told me about this one and said, “it even has a kitchen”.  I told him that was great while thinking to myself that it would be strange if the apartment didn’t have a kitchen.  But, you see, he wasn’t talking about the room, he was talking about everything that goes in it.  Here in Italy, apartments don’t come with kitchen cabinets – neither do houses for that matter.

Now, I’ve lived in various rental houses/apartments and have owned a couple of houses and have never had to install my own cabinets.  They were always included.  The most I ever had to do was provide my own refrigerator.

That’s not the case here though.  When I say there’s nothing there, I mean literally nothing.  You’re liable to find the only things in the kitchen are the water and drain pipes. You have to supply cabinets, sink, stove, refrigerator, etc.  I was flabbergasted when I learned this.  To me it seems rather strange, but I guess to them it’s strange to move in and find kitchen items already in place.  It’s all what you’re accustomed to.

We were lucky, I had two small hanging cabinets, a sink and an undersink cabinet.  As you can imagine, that’s not a lot of space to store things in so we decided to “buy a kitchen”.  I was reluctant at first, not wanting to put money into a rented apartment, but then again, we’ll be taking the stuff with us if and when we eventually move, so I guess it’s not so bad.  At least I have places to store all my kitchen gadgets now…

Sure although it’s not very fancy. We just picked it out of a catalog. I designed and tiled my own kitchen in the US, here we’re waiting for a house of our own before we go all out.

I loved redoing our kitchen! We went all out (well, almost) because it’s our house. I wouldn’t want to do anything too special if I were in an apartment either, you never know if it’ll fit well into the next place you move to.
