I had a visitor the other day.
A member of the town council stopped by to tell me that at mass on Sunday the town would be giving trees to all of the children that were born during the year.
The trees were blessed by the priest and each child born in town received one.
I was expecting a small tree in a pot.
Instead, this is what Luigi received.
Isn’t that a beautiful tree? We had some suggestions to keep it in the house and decorate it, but I’m afraid we wouldn’t be able to keep it alive. Instead we’ll plant it and it will grow along with Luigi.

What a lovely gesture! And I think it’s great that you’re going to plant it.

I thought it was nice. And it will be nice to see how big it gets.

If you plant it in a big pot and keep it watered you can keep it in the house and decorate it for Christmas and plant it after the holidays. We did this when I was a kid, in the late 50′s and early 60′s, and there are still a few giant Douglas Firs or Blue Spruces growing in the yard. We had to wait until Spring as the ground where I live is usually frozen in the Winter.

We had already decorated our tree, so we would have had to “undo” it. We did consider it though. But, I worried too much that the dryness inside would kill it. O took it out to our land and out it inside in a big bucket of water. Hopefully it will do ok until we can plant it. Any idea what kind of pine it is?

It was nice that he actually dropped by to tell you.
We planted a tree for each of our children when they were born, but they were fruit trees so they picked the fruit themselves eventually.

Yes, it was nice of him to drop by. I like the fruit tree idea too.

that’s a great idea. I’m sure he will appreciate it when he gets older.

We planted an apple tree when our daughter was born and never seemed to get any fruit. Two years later when our son was born we planted another apple tree. This was about 30 years ago and the lady that now owns the house is still getting apples. We also have fruit trees at my current house that were planted when I was a kid and the deer enjoy whatever comes from those old neglected and not pruned trees.

Thanks Anne. That’s not my front door (if that’s what you meant by the “small place”. It’s the basement door and yes, it is shorter than a normal door, so the tree isn’t as high as you may think. O and his brother already planted it and we’re hoping it grows nice and tall.
