Thanks Anne. That's not my front door (if that's what you meant by the "small place". It's the basement door and yes, it is shorter than a normal door, so the tree isn't as high as you may think. O and his brother already planted it and we're hoping it grows nice and tall.

We planted an apple tree when our daughter was born and never seemed to get any fruit. Two years later when our son was born we planted another apple tree. This was about 30 years ago and the lady that now owns the house is still getting apples. We also have fruit trees at my current house that were planted when I was a kid and the deer enjoy whatever comes from those old neglected and not pruned trees.

We had already decorated our tree, so we would have had to "undo" it. We did consider it though. But, I worried too much that the dryness inside would kill it. O took it out to our land and out it inside in a big bucket of water. Hopefully it will do ok until we can plant it. Any idea what kind of pine it is?

It was nice that he actually dropped by to tell you.
We planted a tree for each of our children when they were born, but they were fruit trees so they picked the fruit themselves eventually.

If you plant it in a big pot and keep it watered you can keep it in the house and decorate it for Christmas and plant it after the holidays. We did this when I was a kid, in the late 50's and early 60's, and there are still a few giant Douglas Firs or Blue Spruces growing in the yard. We had to wait until Spring as the ground where I live is usually frozen in the Winter.
