Now why didn’t I think of that?

There is one thing in particular that I love about Italian kitchens.

The dish cabinet

Just look at that, would you?  It may seem like just a handy rack, but it’s oh so much more.  You see, it’s open underneath and is always located above the sink.  This way, you don’t have to dry your plates.  You put them in there and any moisture falls into the sink below.  Is that ingenious or what?

My cabinet actually has a little tray under it to catch drops, but it’s removable so that you can either leave it without or just remove the tray once in a while for cleaning.

Of course the rack itself is handy.  It makes it easier to grab just a few plates at a time rather than having to move a stack to get to another stack, etc.  But the drip-dry feature makes it especially appreciated – especially when there’s no dishwasher.  I dislike drying dishes.

I’ve never seen one of these in the states.  Have you?

(Hint to American cabinet makers: You could probably make some money on this one…)

I agree that it is fantastic! Even if you have a dishwasher it clears the sink for other purposes and hides clutter.
My husband wants to redo the kitchen in Italy and get rid of it, but I’m putting my foot down here -it stays!

Why would he want to get rid of it? Anything that helps hide clutter is a good thing.
