First Blood

I’ve been dreading the first time that Luigi really hurts himself. There have been some little bumps and bruises, but so far nothing too drastic. Of course, I knew the day would come …

The other night, O decided to give me a break so that I could read the newspaper – a real luxury these days in terms of time. So, he took Luigi back to the bedroom to play on the bed since he loves to bounce up and down on it. They weren’t back there long when I heard a loud noise and Luigi start crying. I flew down the hallway with the unopened newspaper in hand.

The kid is just too quick for his own good. O put him down in the middle of the bed, turned around to get a toy for him and turned back in time to see him crawling head first off the end of the bed. He grabbed him by the foot, but not in time to stop him from banging his forehead and nose into the baseboard.

We didn’t see any bumps or anything at first because he was crying too hard and covering his face with his hands. Consequently we thought he may have only been scared. But, when I took him over to show him his Mickey Mouse carillon in order to calm him down, I noticed the big bump on his forehead and some blood coming out of his nose. Fortunately, the blood stopped very quickly and ice helped with the bump. Then I checked his head and eyes out thoroughly after he calmed down and he was fine, thank goodness. I’m sure I’m not the only parent whose heart stopped for a full minute at the sight of their child’s blood though. What a terrible feeling!

Today he’s fine except for two slightly black eyes and the mishap seems to be forgotten considering that he’s already trying to climb out of his crib.

Oh isn’t it awful – that breath-stopping moment when you hear the cry, and you KNOW something’s happened. I think the worst I’ve had so far (fingers crossed) was when Lorenzo decided to taste super-glue. He had it all over his tongue and down his tummy, and I was sure it would glue his throat up and stop him breathing. And the CRYING. (I called 115, and they told me superglue is not actually toxic – it comes off if you get them to eat dry biscuits. Not that anyone else will ever need to know, I must be the only mum to leave superglue within reach of a toddler).

I think I would have panicked too at the super-glue. Poor O felt awful and I don’t think he slept a wink all night. That crying just breaks your heart and the blood!

By the way, I’m sure you’re not the only mom to leave superglue within reach of a toddler. If 115 told you that, they have run into it before.
